Build Your Own Social Web Apps

This is an interesting site where you can integrate existing web services and data formats like Google Maps, Flickr pictures, RSS feeds and more into your very own little web applications. With no software to download and no cost it is a relatively simple process all hosted on their server with your own subdomain, and you can even add your own Google AdSense ads to your app site. The design of your app and site are also completely customizable. Here are a few apps people made that I liked: Star Sightings, Cinecrap and Cute Overload. Overall pretty innovative and definitely pushing towards better user to web interaction.

The Web At Your Fingertips…

This is by far the most innovative, useful and complete website I have seen to date. Go to Pageflakes.com immediately and make it your start page. It puts the Personalized Google Homepage to shame. From YouTube videos, Flickr photos, maps, weather, quotes, U.S. National Debt Clock, movie finders, spreadsheet calculator and more, even search the web without leaving your Pageflakes page! I personally like the to-do list set-up where you can have reminders pop-up during your selected time intervals. Also you can Have a site’s RSS feed in your page or you can view the original site within Pageflakes without having to leave. Pageflakes is developed and maintained by Friendix located in Germany.

Bug Me Not

Forget using YOUR information to register at a website for acces, just check BugMeNot.com for a fresh login that isn’t yours. There you can type in the domain name of the website you are trying to register for, ex. NYTimes.com, and see if there are any logins available for you to use. the whole idea is so that you wont have to use your own e-mail address to register and recieve junk mail from the site. I always have a “junk mail account” on hand through a free site like Hotmail or Yahoo for this specific purpose. But this works pretty well too. I can’t see these websites such as LATimes.com, IMDB.com or ChicagoTribune.com being too happy about this. As it will cut away from their authentic user base and begin piling up with “fake” users, if BugMeNot becomes popular enough. There is also a Firefox extension for this user generated website.

Let’s See a Movie! But Which Movie?

We've all had this problem too: What movie should we see? Well now there is an interesting new Personalized Film Recommendation Engine called Criticker. By rating at least 10 films using the 1-100 system within 10 Tiers, you develop your TCI or Taste Compatibility Index. Your TCI is used to find the people and critics whose tastes in cinema most closely match yours. The More films ranked by you, the more accurate you TCI will be. I signed up to check this site out and it is definitely worth it. I ranked about 25 films to start, you can also write mini reviews for each film, and compared my rating to other user's. And with just 25 films rated it was very close with other users' TCIs.

Let’s Do Lunch! But Where?

Yes, we have all had this problem at one time or another. Where to eat? What's good? What's even around here? Now at LunchSlots.com, you can type in your zip code and let it make 3 restaurant selections at random. A pretty cool idea I think, and if you don't like the first three dslections, just spin again. Ther is also an 'Invite People to Lunch' button with a form that comes up to e-mail your friends, family or co-workers. OK, now I'm hungry. Let's eat.

Pick The Worst

Creative little site where you are given two bad options and you have to pick which one you think would be worse. Between the Ovecooked Beef and the Undercooked Chicken, 84% claimed the Undercooked Chicken would be worse…and I agree. PickTheWorst.com

Am I Fat or Not?

AmIFatorNot.com is the hilarious spin-off of HotorNot.com. Go there and you’re greeted with..” Upload Your Picture and discover the blubbery truth…” When I came across this site from another site, before I clicked the link to go, I thought “this has got to be a joke,” well I should have known better. So if you are a bit more self-conscious and need to have that 3rd or 4th opinion, go ahead and upload a picture.
