As part of Montclair State University’s (New Jersey) Telecommunication Program and Fee, all new students for the 2006-2007 academic year will be given a mobile phone that contains specialized hardware and software that are supported by the university. The current mobile phones are offered on both the Sprint and Nextel networks. By June 26, 2006, all new incoming first-time, full-time students must select a phone and plan. Students will be trained on all the mobile applications available at the beginning of the fall semester. Applications include access to course management, class assessment, and real-time transportation information. In addition to academic and community-building applications, MSU Campus Connect includes Rave Guardian, a safety application that enables the mobile phone to act as a safety beacon anywhere in the country whenever the student activates it (click here to see a NJ 12 News video on Rave Guardian). The mobile phones also are centrally supported to assure training and support is consistently provided to all students.Note that MSU Campus Connect mobile phones are not meant to replace student’s existing cell phones. However, because students have asked if they can make the MSU Campus Connect phone their primary mobile phone, there are discounted plans and features available. The plans and phones have been discounted by carriers due to the University’s ability to enter into group partnership with the cellular providers.
For students wishing to make the MSU Campus Connect Phone their primary phone, the program will allow students to:
(1) Transfer their existing cell phone number to their MSU Campus Connect Phone, and
(2) Assist is paying the cancellation penalty from the existing carrier. No cancellation fee for existing Sprint Nextel customers.
