The number of internet lines in Spain soared in the first three months of this year by 45 percent on the same period last year. According to the latest figures from the telecoms regulator, the CMT, by the end of March, there were 5.4 million internet connections in the country, bringing the penetration rate to 12.4 lines per 100 inhabitants. The first three months of this year saw 410,000 new connections, 75.4 percent of which were with Telefonica, with cable operators capturing 15.9 percent of new custom and the rest of Spain’s operators attracting the remaining 8.6 percent.
ADSL still continues to race ahead of cable, with 365,000 of the new connections being ADSL, compared to 65,000 cable internet connections. At the end of March, bundled internet offers made up the majority of the market – 80 percent of broadband customers had contracted at least one other service. Via Telecompaper
