JazzMutant : Lemur Multitouch Surface Controller v1.5

by DJ Neawedde | 26th August 2006

Lemur_1The Lemur from JAZZMUTANT is a one-of-a-kind piece of gear for sure. Using an entirely customizable and modular graphical interface on an extremely high quality touch screen panel, the Lemur can be used to control pretty much anything you could possibly imagine in entirely new ways. It has two options for communications between itself and whatever you are controlling, whether that be a music sequencer (Logic Pro, Pro Tools, etc), a synthesizer, software virtual instrument, 3D animation or video editing software, VJ software, live stage lighting command centers, a robot, you name it. What makes the Lemur so universal in what it can control is its use of open communication protocols. It uses midi, which has been a universal standard in music devices and all other sorts of things for many years. The Lemur can also take advantage of a new protocol called OpenSoundControl, or OSC, which is based on standard 100mb Ethernet and is being rapidly adopted by many other manufactures.

Another thing that really makes the Lemur cool is its patented multitouch technology. Normally, we interface and interact with electronic technology in a very single-touch sort of way. We’re used to using a mouse, keyboard, remote control, etc, with which we activate one button at a time. The Lemur allows one to use all ten fingertips to manipulate things simultaneously, opening the door to an unbelievably higher level of creativity.

Also worth noting, the Lemur comes with an extremely easy to use cross-platform software admin application to allow users to configure everything very quickly and easily.
