Trading your cell phone contract

by DJ Neawedde | 25th September 2006

People often don’t know that they can drop their mobile phone contract without paying the termination fee, which is usually around $150 to $200 per line. All they need to do is find someone willing to take the contract over for its remaining term. This is where CellTradeUSA.com and Resellular come in to the picture. They are online match makers in the consumer cell phone frenzy - connecting ’sellers’, who are ditching contracts, and ‘buyers’, who are seeking to take over contracts.

Cell Trade USABased in Kearny, NJ since 2003, CellTradeUSA.com is free for buyers and $20 for sellers. Sellers only pay the fee after they start receiving emails from interested buyers and in the case they want to access the sender’s contact information. They typically have around which typically sports at least 1,500 active contract’s up for grabs.

REsellularFor a one time fee of $15, Resellular, which we reviewed in June, allows you to advertise your remaining wireless contract to thousands of nationwide users looking for shorter contracts. If someone is interested in your contract, you recieve notification with that person’s contact information. Your posting will not expire unless your remove it or your contract ends.

Just because you leave your cellphone carrier mid-contract doesn’t mean you have to give up your phone number. In fact, you’re entitled by law to keep it thanks to a Federal Communications Committee mandate on number portability. Once you have someone lined up to take over your old contract, go to the carrier you plan to switch to and ask them to port your number. Your new carrier will call your old one and your old contract will be automatically canceled. You need to call your old carrier and tell them you have someone ready to take over your contract. The old carrier will complete the transfer and you won’t have to pay a termination fee.
