Why MySpace Video can’t defeat YouTube

King YouTubeAfter reading Pete Cashmore’s post ‘MySpace Video Hits Back Against YouTube’, I began to realize that no matter how hard MySpace ‘hits back’, how many videos they serve, or how much they leverage their massive user base - Myspace Video will never reign over YouTube as the video sharing king.

Why won’t MySpace become the ‘video sharing king’? Well for one it’s quality NOT quantity. Although MySpace has served twice as many videos as YouTube, they have a lack of quality videos, and we can see this by simply searching for videos on each site. For instance, search ‘Robots’ on MySpace Video, then search ‘Robots’ on YouTube. The caliber of the results are drastically different. So when it comes to video sharing networks, content is king.

Next, as Cashmore states in his post above, ‘MySpace was responsible for the initial seeding of [YouTube] but now YouTube has become a destination of its own.’ YouTube is self sufficient, and Google aquiring YouTube is a sure sign of this. YouTube is clearly an imprinted brand in many web surfers’ heads now.

Finally, no matter how much innovating and integration of MySpace video into user profiles happens, MySpace Video will always be chained to MySpace. If I want to post a video on this blog, I am surely not going to MySpace Video to get the video (especially if the selection is less than fresh quality).

With the recent aquisition, Google is most likely about to get extremely innovative with YouTube, and we will hopefully see some fresh new features in the near future.

[…] is ad supported, using the AOL Advertising.com ad network to maintain ad inventory. Diversion Media, the parent of Travelistic, is a startup led by Nicholas Butterworth who is the former head of onlinefor MTV. The video sharing arena of the web will be an interesting sector to keep an eye on - considering the recent Google-YouTube acquistion, MySpace Video’s recent attempts to displaceand new video mashup PureVideo’s debut. I believe Travelistic will rise fast and be more than successful due to the site’s very niche content and large target audience.
