The Age of Anti-Bacterial Gadgets

They are things we put our hands on every day - keyboards, mice and phones. And as Mike Elgan wrote in a recent article, Why phones keyboards and mice make me sick, “Most germs, including the influenza virus, can survive for only about five minutes on your hands, but they can live for up to two days on phones, keyboards, mice…” Elgan also lets us know that phones have 25,127 germs per square inch while toilet seats had only 49 germs per square inch. So obviously these highly used objects may carry risks to our health.

For the past few years, new bacteria resistant super gadgets have emerged from many technology companies all over the world. There is the Elecom M-ABUR mouse that has a sort of bacteria fighting resin. Then we have the IOGEAR Germ Free Laser Mouse, which is coated with a Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) and Silver (Ag) nano-particle compound. The Evergreen Pen Mouse also contains the silver nano-particle agent which keeps germs at bay.

The Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 3200 Laser (shown above), which is a wireless keyboard-and-mouse combination coated with silver-based AgION Technologies antimicrobial technology which is also present in the Motorola i870 mobile phone. Some alternatives to anti-bacterial coatings are special condoms for your cell phone or Unotron’s washable keyboards and mice. Some more anti-bacterial products, that I didn’t mention, are mentioned in Elgan’s article.
