Hacker cracks Apple’s FairPlay DRM

Apple FairPlay DRM CrackedNorway native Jon Lech Johansen (a.k.a. ‘DVD Jon’) claims to have cracked Apple’s FairPlay copy protection technology.

Unlike his previous work, which he usually posts for free, the Norway native plans to capitalize on his efforts through his Redwood Shores-based DoubleTwist Ventures, said the company’s only other employee, managing director Monique Farantzos. An unnamed client will soon use the technology so its copy-protected content will be playable on iPods, she said, declining to give any specifics. (AP)

According to a report on GigaOM, Johansen approached Apple’s CEo Steve Jobs about this, and Jobs told him that Apple would not pursue legal action. Howeverm Jobs warned that other companies might not take so kindly to their motives.

The now 22 year old Johansen became famous at age 15, when he created DeCSS to unlock the Content Scrambling System, or CSS, the film industry used on DVD movies to prevent illegal copying.
