I-O Data Device will soon release their “HDMC-U series” mobile external HDDs. A waterproof rubber material is wrapped around the hard drive inside the outer body, waterproofing is good until a depth of 1 m. The device is also shock resistant, “after a total of 26 times of proving tests, in which the HDD in off mode was dropped from a height of 122 cm against each surface, line and corner (6 surfaces + 12 lines + 8 corners).”

The company aims to ship 20,000 units of these two models per year. The 8GB “HDMC-U8″ ships mid-December for Â¥15,700 ($135 USD) , and the 12GB “HDMC-U12″ ships late December for Â¥21,000 ($180 USD).
