The first ATM in the world was installed in North London, 40 years ago this week. Invented by Mr Shepherd-Barron, it was all based on an existing vending machine concept, “It struck me there must be a way I could get my own money, anywhere in the world or the UK. I hit upon the idea of a chocolate bar dispenser, but replacing chocolate with cash.”
In a quaint meeting, the Barclays Bank CEO signed a contract with Shepherd-Barron over a pink gin, and history was made. It’s odd that something we completely take for granted was at one point a bizarre concept. I can’t remember when I last went into a bank to get money out, but at one point that was the only way to get your hands on your cash. In fact, I hardly ever even use cash anymore, so maybe ATMs will disappear in a few years anyway.
