This is one of the best looking portable DVD players I’ve ever seen. Polaroid launched 2 other portable DVD players back in April which were also capable of recording digital broadcast. This model is features a 7-inch 480×234 LCD that rotates 180 degrees and can be closed clamshell style. Also has DivX support, view JPEGs, battery lasts 3 hours of playback, and has AV out. Will be available in Japan late June for about 19,800 Yen ($165 USD). Via AV Watch

The post got over 15,000 Diggs, after which the post was deleted by Digg and the user who posted it was banned. Vivid is bringing porn to Blu-ray, Sony denies ban

As Gizmo Blog says “Back in the 1980s, when VHS and Betamax dueled it out over movie lovers’ wallets, the former won out when Beta turned its nose up at porn.” This is comparable to the HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray format war of late. But now, since Blu-ray apparently will do porn, it’s becoming even harder to tell which format will prevail. Maybe both? And Sony yesterday said it’s not trying to stop adult studios from releasing their titles on Blu-ray.

Here’s what Sony had to say: “There’s no prohibition against adult content,” Lisa Gephardt, a spokeswoman for Sony Corp. of America, said. “We don’t tell people how they can use the licenses they get from the Blu-ray Disc Association.” Sony still has a long-standing policy not to manufacture DVDs with adult content. “Sony disc manufacturing will not manufacture adult titles,” Gephardt said. “We have never done it, and we have no plans to.”

Yesterday, it was officially announced Vivid Entertainment will be bringing “Debbie Does Dallas…Again” to Blu-ray. Set for release March 28 for about $39.95.

1 terabyte of data on a single DVD

University of Central Florida 1TB DVDUniversity of Central Florida Chemistry Professor Kevin D. Belfield and his team have developed a new technology allowing users to store as much as 1 terabyte (approx. 500 movies) onto a single disc. So much for those Hitachi-Maxwell 300GB CDs.

It is Belfield’s ‘Two-Photon 3-D Optical Data Storage’ system which makes this great feat possible. The team used lasers to compact large amounts of data onto a DVD while maintaining excellent quality. The data is stored permanently without the possibility of damage.

The challenge scientists faced for years was that light is also used to read the information. The light couldn’t distinguish between reading and writing, so it would destroy the recorded information. Belfield’s team developed a way to use light tuned to specific colors or wavelengths to allow information that a user wants to keep to stay intact.
