True Random Number Generator Goes Online

Computers aren’t very good at random numbers. The problem is that they’re too predictable, and will eventually repeat themselves. If you call a random number in a line of code, then with the same seed value every time that program runs you will get the same order of numbers. Sometimes this is a problem, and sometimes it’s not.

In some academic applications it’s vital to get true random numbers, and there have been some interesting solutions. Now though, there is an online resource that can provide true random numbers by measuring the quantum process of photon emission. The Quantum Random Bit Generator Service (QRBGS) was developed by computer scientists from the Ruder Boškovic Institute (RBI) in Zagreb, Croatia. ::Press Esc

SAP Hacks Oracle

SAP has admitted hacking into Oracle’s network and carrying out, “inappropriate downloads.” Pretty much anything you download from a competitors hacked network is inappropriate, I would say. It was a subsidiary of SAP, TomorrowNow, that performed the espionage, and SAP said the themselves had not accessed the material.

SAP CEO, Henning Kagerman, said, “Even a single inappropriate download is unacceptable from my perspective. We regret very much that this occurred.” Oracle say that the act was, “corporate theft on a grand scale.”

A BBC article says that the downloaded material was ‘copyrighted software’, so I can only presume that it involved source code. If that’s the case then it could be a major problem. If coders at a company are proven to have seen a competitors code then that has implications on SAPs IP rights on their own code.

Google Desktop now for Linux

For all you Linux users out there, Google has just released Google Desktop for Linux. This was built mainly out of their Beijing office, and has almost the same functionality as the first Windows version of Google Desktop Search and the Quick Search Box. It definitely runs on Debian 4.0, Fedora Core 6, Ubuntu 6.10, SUSE 10.1, and Red Flag 5. One of the best advantages of Google Desktop is the inclusion of GMail messages in search results, which I can say is awesome and has saved me many times. Just hit ‘Ctrl’ twice to bring up the Quick Search Box and start searching.

How to: Strip your account info from iTunes Plus tracks

Everyone has been in a frenzy about how some iTunes Music Store items are now DRM free, but your account info is embedded in purchased files. So if your little file did find it’s way onto a P2P, and our friends at the RIAA saw, they would try and track it back to you. But, what if it wasn’t you that did it? What if someone stole, hacked, and invaded your system and put your entire library online that you purchased? There’s too many scenarios where the purchaser could be rendered innocent. That’s why embedding this information on iTMS files is wrong.

Here are the detailed and easy instructions on ‘How to strip your iTunes account information from iTunes Plus tracks’ - Have fun!

OS X on Sony UX

Someone called Sev7en, perhaps not their real name, has posted a very detailed tutorial on how to get OS X running on a Sony Vaio UX. Of course, this isn’t allowed by the OS X EULA, so the tutorial has the standard disclaimer;

This method is not confirmed or trusted and some people say it is illegal because the EULA says that you are not allowed to install OSX on non-Apple hardware. This means that for most people it is ILLEGAL to install osx on their computer. If you aren’t an Apple developer, leave this guide now.

If you are an Apple developer, then the guide looks fairly simple, and the results look good. You could always just wait for an iPhone though, which will have much of the functionality, at a fraction of the cost. :: Micro PC Talk
